Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced two major agricultural missions on Saturday, marking a new milestone in India’s push toward sustainable and self-reliant farming. Together valued at Rs 35,440 crore, these schemes focus on improving crop productivity, reducing import dependency, and empowering farmers with better technology and infrastructure.
The launch coincided with the birth anniversary of socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan, underlining the government’s continued commitment to rural and agricultural development.
Two Flagship Schemes to Strengthen Indian Agriculture
The first initiative, Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses, has an outlay of Rs 11,440 crore and aims to increase India’s pulses production from 252 lakh tonnes to 350 lakh tonnes by 2030–31. The scheme focuses on expanding cultivation, improving seed quality, and strengthening post-harvest infrastructure to reduce reliance on imports.
The second scheme, Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, is a Rs 24,000 crore program designed to transform 100 underperforming agricultural districts across the country. It will focus on improving irrigation facilities, promoting crop diversification, enhancing productivity, and building modern storage and processing infrastructure. Together, these initiatives are expected to create new opportunities for farmers while stabilizing India’s food supply chain.
Massive Infrastructure Boost Across Sectors
In addition to the two flagship schemes, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multiple projects worth over Rs 5,450 crore in the agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and food processing sectors.
Among the highlights are an Artificial Insemination Training Center in Bengaluru and Jammu and Kashmir, Centres of Excellence in Amreli and Banas, an IVF Lab in Assam under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, and Milk Powder Plants in Mehsana, Indore, and Bhilwara.
Further, the Prime Minister inaugurated a Fish Feed Plant under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana in Tezpur, Assam, alongside new cold chain and agro-processing infrastructure projects designed to modernize rural supply chains.
Expanding Rural Opportunities
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation for future-ready projects such as the Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, a Trout Fisheries project in Uttarakhand, an Integrated Aqua Park in Nagaland, a Smart Fishing Harbour in Karaikal, and an advanced Aqua Park in Hirakud, Odisha.
These projects are expected to not only generate local employment but also enhance rural income through sustainable fisheries, livestock management, and modernized agriculture practices.
A Vision for Self-Reliant Agriculture
Speaking at the event, PM Modi emphasized that India’s agriculture sector needs both innovation and investment. “We are moving toward a future where Indian farmers will not only feed the nation but also contribute significantly to the global food supply chain,” he said.
The combined efforts of these initiatives aim to boost productivity, strengthen food processing networks, and empower farmers with the latest technology to compete in global markets. With the implementation set to begin in the upcoming rabi season, these projects are positioned to play a central role in shaping India’s agricultural transformation through the next decade.
