IndiGo, India’s leading airline with over 60 percent of the domestic aviation market, has made another strategic leap by signing a deal to purchase 30 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft. This move doubles its existing wide-body order from 30 to 60, solidifying IndiGo’s commitment to expanding its global footprint.

IndiGo Doubles Down On Its Wide-Body Strategy

The new agreement was officially confirmed through a contract signed with Airbus, converting 30 of IndiGo’s 70 purchase rights into firm orders. This deal positions IndiGo among an elite group of airlines with large wide-body fleets, marking a significant milestone for the Indian aviation industry.

With this expansion, IndiGo now has the purchase rights for 40 more aircraft in the A350 family, giving it flexibility for future growth. The airline’s move signals its intent to capture a larger share of long-haul routes traditionally dominated by Gulf carriers such as Emirates and Qatar Airways.

Part Of IndiGo’s Long-Term Global Vision

IndiGo’s latest acquisition follows a memorandum of understanding signed with Airbus in June 2025 and comes just a year after its initial order of 30 A350-900 aircraft in April 2024. The airline plans to use these aircraft to expand international connectivity while maintaining its cost-efficient operating model.

In its official statement, IndiGo described the move as a key step in its journey toward becoming a truly global airline. The A350-900 aircraft, powered by Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB engines, are known for their exceptional fuel efficiency and reliability — critical factors for long-haul operations.

Strengthening India’s Aviation Footprint

The Airbus A350-900’s superior range and efficiency will allow IndiGo to operate non-stop flights to Europe, North America, and Australia. This aligns with the airline’s long-term goal of doubling its total capacity by 2030 and positioning itself as a global player from India’s fast-growing aviation market.

Currently, IndiGo operates a fleet of over 400 aircraft, primarily consisting of A320NEO, A321NEO, and A321XLR models. With more than 900 aircraft already on order, IndiGo’s aggressive fleet expansion underlines its ambition to lead not only in domestic skies but also in international routes.

A Game Changer For Indian Aviation

The addition of 30 more A350-900s signals IndiGo’s evolution from a domestic budget carrier into a globally competitive airline capable of challenging established international players. This expansion will significantly boost India’s aviation capacity, enhance connectivity, and attract more global travelers.

As the airline continues to modernize its fleet and extend its international presence, IndiGo’s growth story stands as a testament to India’s emergence as a major aviation hub.
