Festive Season Sets a New Benchmark
India’s consumer economy has witnessed its strongest Navratri sales in over a decade, fueled by the Modi government’s GST rationalisation that lowered taxes on essential and aspirational products. Families across the country upgraded cars, electronics and appliances, triggering a surge that brands described as record-breaking. The buoyant sentiment has transformed Navratri 2025 into a landmark moment for India’s festive economy.
Automobiles Lead the Festive Surge
The automobile sector emerged as one of the biggest winners this Navratri. Maruti Suzuki posted its best-ever festive performance in at least 10 years, doubling sales compared to last year. The company secured 1.5 lakh bookings and expects to touch 2 lakh by the end of the season. Deliveries reached 1.65 lakh vehicles in just the first eight days of the festival, including a record 30,000 cars on Day One alone, marking Maruti’s best single-day performance in 35 years.
Other automakers also benefited from the festive rush. Mahindra and Mahindra reported a 60 percent increase in sales, driven by its popular SUV lineup. Hyundai saw SUVs like Creta and Venue account for over 72 percent of its total sales. Tata Motors crossed 50,000 deliveries with strong demand for Altroz, Punch, Nexon and Tiago. Hero MotoCorp reported a doubling of showroom footfalls, while Bajaj Auto also saw significant gains across two-wheelers.
Electronics and Retail See Explosive Growth
Consumer electronics brands also recorded unprecedented demand. Haier reported an 85 percent jump in sales, nearly exhausting its festive stock of premium TVs priced over Rs 2.5 lakh. The company sold 300 to 350 units of 65-inch TVs daily during Navratri. LG Electronics India declared exponential growth across all product categories, while Reliance Retail, the country’s largest retailer, logged a 20 to 25 percent jump in sales with strong traction in large-screen TVs, smartphones and fashion.
Other electronics retailers also cashed in on the festive momentum. Vijay Sales reported more than 20 percent growth, while Godrej Appliances clocked high double-digit expansion, reflecting how the GST cuts boosted affordability and encouraged households to upgrade.
A Strong Outlook for the Festive Economy
With brands and retailers reporting growth between 25 and 100 percent, the first half of India’s festive season has already emerged as the most powerful consumption window of the year. Covering Onam, Durga Puja and Dussehra, this period now contributes nearly half of total festive sales, underscoring how policy reforms combined with rising consumer sentiment have lifted India’s economy into a new festive high.
The Bigger Picture
India’s record Navratri sales highlight how lower taxes and improved affordability can unleash a wave of demand across sectors. From cars to consumer durables, the numbers point to renewed confidence among households and a festive economy that continues to set new records. With Diwali and Christmas still ahead, the momentum is likely to carry through the season, making 2025 a historic year for India’s consumption story.
